Next month will be Rose’s first birthday! In the run-up to such a milestone it’s standard to come out with all the cliche’s of the day – like ‘where has the time gone?’ ‘it only seems like yesterday that she was born’. But I shall spare you all the gushing!
I have been in two minds as to whether or not to have a big party for Rose’s first birthday. It seems like it’s the ‘done thing’ to have big birthday bash for a first birthday but after much deliberation Phill and I have decided to have immediate family only around to our house for a little birthday party for Rose. She see’s her grandparents and aunts and uncles all the time so she will feel comfortable with them. Having lots and lots of people round might overwhelm her! I’ll keep the bigger parties for when she is older and can play with other little ones. But I still want to put some effort into marking her milestone birthday by decorating the house, putting on some party food and getting Rose something special.
CUTE PARTY DECOR
I definitely have to get Rose the obligatory helium balloon and some cute table decorations and signage. I want to keep it cheap and cheerful and there won’t be a specific theme. I’ll keep the Disney Princess themes for when she is a little older I think!
My top birthday decor picks are as follows:
FUN PARTY FOOD
No party is complete without some great nibbles! Rose loves her grub now so I will make sure there is plenty of food she can tuck into, which will also appeal to the adults! I’m thinking plenty of easy-to-eat sandwiches, cocktail sausages, breaded chicken dippers, fresh berries and marshmallow twizzlers! And let’s not forget the cake. My mum-in-law is a cake baker and she has decided to make Rose a unicorn cake for her first birthday! Music to my ears! I have long-since admired the beautiful unicorn cakes that Claire of Lily Pink Bakery creates. I can’t wait for Rose to take her first bite of birthday cake! I’ll be sure to capture the moment on camera 🙂

1ST BIRTHDAY PRESENTS
Now for the difficult part. What do I buy my precious little girl for her 1st birthday? A mega toy? An adorable party outfit? A book to treasure? Decisions decisions. I definitely don’t want to go overboard and overwhelm her with toys galore or spend stupid amounts of money. I think I want something she and I will treasure for years to come, such as a beautiful well-made soft toy, a silver baby bangle or a very special book.
My top picks for first birth presents are as follows:
Dogger by Shirley Hughes – Dogger was one of my very first childhood book memories. My brother and I both loved this tsimple story by Shirley Hughes. A 40th anniversary edition of the popular book has just been released, and as a huge collector of Shirley’s works, I am very tempted to give this book to Rose in the hopes she will come to love it as much as me. I like the idea of inscribing the book so she will always know it was given to her on her first birthday.
Cotton Pink Dress – I don’t often put Rose in a dress but if you can’t put your daughter in a dress on her birthday, when can you?! I love the colour and shape of this coral pink cotton dress from Marks and Spencer.
Wooden Bead Maze Cube – Rose still isn’t one to sit and play with toys. She just wants to crawl or walk everywhere. But I have a feeling she would enjoy this wooden activity cube. If I get it for her, hopefully it will keep her attention for more than two minutes!
Pom Pom Teepee – I love the idea of getting Rose a teepee and I’ve long been a fan of the beautiful handmade Lulu and Weasel teepees – which come in all sorts of plain and colourful designs. This rainbow pom pom teepee has caught my eye but I’m not sure if Rose is perhaps a little too young to really enjoy it?
Moulin Roty ‘Olga’ cuddly toys – French company Moulin Roty just do the most exquisite cuddly toys. Like many babies, Rose has a multitude of cuddly toys but I’m not sure if I can resist buying her just one more…and these cute geese toys are just beautiful. For those of you who are based in Northern Ireland, Utopia in Belfast’s city centre stock Moulin Roty.
Sterling Silver Three Diamond Baby Bangle – I was given a silver baby bangle when I was Rose’s age and whilst I love the idea of Rose wearing mine, perhaps it would be nice to get her a brand new one? To be honest, I probably will have her wear my old bangle on her first birthday as there is something nice about the passing down of jewellery. But if I didn’t have a my bangle to give her I would be very tempted by this sterling silver bangle from H. Samuel.
