A few Sunday’s ago Phill, Rose and I drove down to Bushmills, a village in the North Coast of Country Antrim, famous as the home of Bushmills Whiskey. Bushmills is just over an hour away from our home in Belfast and we arrived at our first destination – Bushmills Distillery – just after midday in the hopes of taking the tour. Unfortunately for us no kids are allowed on the tour. Apparently the alcohol vapours are not safe for little ones. It was a bit of a let-down but we had plans to go on to Bushmills Inn for Sunday Lunch so at least we had something else to look forward to and it wasn’t a total waste of a journey.
Although we couldn’t do the tour, the staff were kind enough to give us two drinks vouchers to use in the bar. We took the opportunity to have a walk around the grounds, check out the gift shop and then visit the bar for a drink. Bushmills is the oldest working distillery in Ireland and, as you can imagine, is a huge tourist spot. On our visit Phill bought a t-shirt and he enjoyed an early afternoon Bushmills 12 Year Single Malt whilst I stuck with a soft drink.
Bushmills Inn is a 4* hotel and restaurant just a few minutes away in the car from the distillery and I’d heard lots of good things about the place over the years so I was excited to sample their Sunday Carvery. And it didn’t disappoint. We arrived for lunch at 1.30pm and were showed to our table straight away. I had the prawn and crab remoulade to start whilst Phill had the slow-cooked pork belly. Both dishes were elegantly presented and tasted really good. When it came to the carvery, you could choose three meats and we piled our plates high! There was plenty of potato and vegetable offerings, as well as enormous Yorkshire puddings. The service was excellent, with the waiting staff being very polite and attentive.
Rose was as good as gold the entire trip and was loving looking around her the entire day. Our little trip definitely brightened up a very dreary January day. I captured the day on video, so check out the family vlog and please subscribe to my Youtube channel if you don’t already!
