Does having a fuss-free three course meal in the comfort of your own home sound way more appealing than dining out on Valentine’s Day with a ton of other loved up couples? The much loved Marks and Spencer dine in for two range is back for Valentine’s Day, and as usual you get top-class food with minimal effort. But be quick, as the Valentines range is proving very popular and ends on Monday 15 February.
The Valentines Dine In for Two range is extensive. There is so much choice, so it mightn’t be a bad thing if your choices are some-what limited (due to popularity) when you arrive at your local store. Phill and I went to select our food on Friday after work and the beef wellington we had set our hopes on for the main course was all gone. We choose the Gastropub duck a l’orange instead. The portion size was really generous!
For starters we choose the Gastropub runny Scotch egg. We must commend ourselves on our choice as this was divine! I have fond memories of M&S scotch eggs from childhood but these are on another level of deliciousness. These scotch eggs are wrapped in sausagemeat and coated in breadcrumbs. Cook in the oven for just 12 minutes and you have a perfectly runny egg.
We selected the Chopin crispy wedges to go with our duck main course. The duck legs were absolutely divine – beautifully tender and fatty on top. And the sweet orange sauce will prove addictive. I just added mixed vegetables to help balance the dish.
I didn’t think the quality of the starter and main could be matched but the Billionaire’s Bar was scrumptious. The gold exterior looked absolutely stunning and thankfully it wasn’t a case of style over substance. The salted caramel, mini chocolate balls and chocolate ganache filling was delightful. It’s a sizeable portion but wasn’t overly heavy and rich.
Finally, to compliment the meal we had a South African Cabernet Sauvignon and listened to The White Buffalo’s ‘Love and the Death of Damnation’ record. We may have also had a chocolate or two… a perfect romantic night in!
